Datsun “slide chart” pocket calculators

August 19, 2014 by Greg

Long before the Internet, and even before the hand-held calculator, people needed a way to make quick calculations without doing a lot of mathematical computation. The slide rule, a 17th-century device, rapidly became the most commonly used calculation tool in science and engineering.

pickett_slide_rule

The slide rule was the inspiration for countless pocket calculators, referred to as “slide charts.”

Typically made of cardboard or plastic, a slide chart was typically task-specific, and these handy devices could be tucked in a pocket for quick reference. For decades, the slide chart was the go-to gadget for engineering, aviation, photography, finance, construction, machine work, surveying, and even cooking!

An example of a common slide chart:

Of course, it goes without saying that there are people who collect these, and they’re still used in certain industries today. But we’re interested in Datsun collectibles, so here’s a few Datsun-specific slide charts that I think you’ll find interesting – Enjoy!

Datsun postage stamps?

August 19, 2014 by Greg

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country lying within the Lesser Antilles, in the eastern Caribbean Sea. St. Vincent is situated in the Windward Islands at the lower end of the Caribbean chain, while the Grenadines comprise a chain of little islands and rocks between St Vincent and Grenada. In 1973, the island nation began to issue their own stamps; the island gained independence in 1979. Beginning in December 1992, most stamps issued by St. Vincent are identified with “St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”

Our example here is inscribed, “Union Island – Grenadines of St. Vincent.” Union Island is but a mere postage stamp itself, at 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long… but it brought us this cool postage stamp of a Series 1 1970 Datsun 240Z!

Datsun 240Z postage stamp

This one is well-preserved here amongst the rest of my Datsun collectibles, but I’ll bet there are more out there. Anyone else have an example of a Datsun postage stamp? Tell us about it in the Datsun Forums!

1972 Datsun emissions maintenance, adjustments and warranty

August 17, 2014 by Greg

Here’s some really cool documents that came with our 1972 240Z – I’ve scanned them to share with you guys.

The brochure shows a breakdown of the maintenance required to keep the [very primitive] emissions equipment functioning properly. Since emissions equipment was a new “thing” for consumers, a letter from Nissan Corporate arrived soon after the first owner took delivery of the car.

Hope you enjoy checking out these “historical” documents!

SR311 Fairlady Roadster racing parts catalog from 1969!

August 3, 2014 by Greg

As early as 1963, the Datsun / Nissan Fairlady Roadster was a formidable competitor on the race circuits of Japan, competing against the best offerings from Europe, Italy, Germany and other Japanese manufacturers. From 1967 to 1970, no other car even placed in the top 5 at Fuji Circuit… That’s domination!

Pre-war Datsun Parts Catalog?

August 3, 2014 by Greg

For quite some time, Nissan / Datsun continued to maintain parts for their earliest models. This catalog shows parts for the Datsun 17, which was simply an updated version of Datsun’s prior cars. The Datsun 17 ended production in late 1938, and was the last model built before passenger car production was halted as the Japanese military prepared to escalate their military activities.

Datsun Fairlady Sports and Bluebird Road Test – Motor Trend, 1961

July 20, 2014 by Greg

In 1961, Motor Trend predicted, “Datsun will soon have a lot of Americans driving cars marked Made in Japan.” There’s no question they were right, and the road test they conducted on the Bluebird and Fairlady Roadster are pretty awesome to read, 53 years later!

Datsun 411 Sedan Road Test – Car and Driver, 1967

July 20, 2014 by Greg

In 1967, Datsun was still an unknown quantity to the American motoring public. Car & Driver reviewed the 1967 Datsun 411 in both sedan and wagon form – they proclaimed several of its virtues, while bemoaning other characteristics. Either way, it’s a great read for early Datsun enthusiasts!
